Turkish Porcelain Tile Manufacturing Industry

The Turkish ceramic tile industry ranks fifth in the world in ceramic production and exports. The overall production of Turkish porcelain tile manufacturers is in the top three in Europe (source: Turkish Ministry of Industry and Technology, Ceramics Sector Report 2021).

Türkiye ranks 8th in world ceramic exports and 5th in ceramic tile exports. This is so because ceramic and porcelain tiles dominate ceramic manufacturing in Turkey. In addition, Turkish porcelain tile manufacturers, in particular, are export-oriented. China, India, and Brazil are the top three ceramic tile makers.

  • Turkey’s ceramic tile exports climbed by 24% in value in 2021, hitting the highest level in ten years.
  • Turkey boosted its ceramic tile world exports by 25% in 2021 compared to 2020, exporting 981 million USD and keeping its fifth place in the world rankings.

Porcelain Tile Certificate

I’ll discuss a well-known certificate, particularly among people in the construction industry. The Porcelain Tile Certification Agency (PTCA) determines whether or not a ceramic coating is porcelain. Turkish porcelain manufacturers provide samples to this organization, which evaluates the samples’ water absorption rate using ASTM C373. If the ceramic tile absorbs water by 0.5% or less (almost no absorption), the Turkish porcelain manufacturer receives porcelain accreditation from PTCA. As a result, I’ll include Turkish porcelain and porcelain tile manufacturers who have this certification.

Turkish Porcelain Tile Manufacturers

In addition to the three Turkish porcelain tile manufacturers mentioned above, there are 11 more listed below. These companies are mainly exporters and significant players in the Turkish porcelain tile manufacturing industry.

Prices for Ceramic and Porcelain Tiles

Ceramic or porcelain tiles are generally cheaper than other flooring materials. Porcelain tiles are more expensive than ceramic tiles. Prices for both vary based on tile density (i.e., based on PEI values). The higher the PEI value, the higher the price. Most ceramic tiles have a PEI class rating of 0 to 3, while most porcelain tiles have a class 4 or 5 rating. Source: ISO 4531:2022 for Food Contact Enamels. In the product specifications sections of Turkish porcelain manufacturers, this is commonly referred to as the PEI value (abrasion qualification).

Over the last decade, the average unit price of Turkish ceramic tile exports has been around $6 USD.
